PET OF THE WEEK

February 6, 2006

Dear Editor,

After reading your column this morning (2/6) about spaying and nuetering animals I was prompted to write you.

A couple of weeks ago, when driving home on H Street in a horrible downpour, I saw a gray cat hunkered down on the corner of H and Manzanita. Strange place for a cat in the rain. So I whizzed around the block, stopped and walked up to her. She wanted to run but couldn't - back legs wouldn't support her. Even though I had a client in 45 minutes, I wrapped her in a towel from the car and took her to Eureka Veterinary Hospital for an evaluation.

Later that afternoon, when returning to pick her up, they told me she had a broken pelvis - a run in with a car. All else looked good and she would heal nicely with cage rest and TLC. So off we went to get her comfy in my session room - quiet and away from my own cats.

Here is where the story gets really sad... I put ads in all the papers, notified the County Shelter and the Humane Society. By Wednesday I had a phone call from the owner's son, to whom I gave all my information. He said his Mom would call that evening.

No phone came, nor where my calls answered......Hmmmm. Calling from a different location on Thursday, I once again talked with the son, who said his Mom didn't want to bring the cat home for it to die. I explained how well she was doing - even walking to her litter box, eating fine, etc, a very sweet, loving kitty. Very puzzling.

Then a sister-in-law called, and after hearing the story said she would do what she could. Again, no more contact, and didn't return my calls. Silly me, they were using caller ID. Finally, one last call to them on Friday, and yet another man on the end of the phone who ultimately said they didn't want her back -even when I offered to let the vet bill ride. Jeez!

So little Cleo (their name) or Madre (my name, as she had obviously had kittens) ended up at the county shelter anyhow - Humane Society said they didn't have room for an adult cat - only kittens.

So here is this sweet momma cat - $200 and a week's worth of healing - only to be rejected from her family. I checked in with the shelter on Wednesday and she has been put on the web site for adoption. I was told they are trying to get her into one of the rescue groups.

I think this kitty would make a great companion for someone. She is loving and so grateful to be rescued from the rain, and the not so loving home she came from. Please consider her for your column or for the Pet of the Week.

Another note - even though Animal Control has a fund for emergency care for injured animals, they would not reimburse me because they had not picked up the kitty to begin with. Fine way to treat a longtime Eureka resident and animal champion! I also sent the vet bill/info and the owners name/number with the animal control person that came to pick her up from my house.

Blessings,

[Note: We're delighted to report that shortly after this letter was published in the Eureka Reporter, Madre the Cat was adopted from the Humboldt County Animal Shelter. The woman who adopted her has called Linda for a long and enjoyable conversation about this very special, very fortunate cat.]
